IOTA releases new product together with Jaguar Land Rover, STMicroelectronics

  • The IOTA Foundation has published IOTA Access in cooperation with Jaguar Land Rover, STMicroelectronics and other major companies.
  • The product is initially focused on the automotive industry. For example, IOTA Access is installed in Jaguar vehicles.

As the IOTA Foundation made public in a blog post, it has teamed up with the British luxury car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover, the European chip manufacturer STMicroelectronics, as well as EDAG, RIDDLE&CODE, NTT DATA Romania, ETO GROUP and BiiLabs to launch IOTA Access. To enable working demos, a first alpha version, IOTA Access v0.1.0-alpha, was released yesterday.

It is a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with a working implementation based on ARM Cortex-A under Embedded Linux (the famous Raspberry Pi 3/4). Efforts are also planned to run a work implementation on the STMicroelectronics SGP-TC-EVK Automotive Gateway Platform.

The far-reaching application scenarios of IOTA Access

IOTA Access is an open source framework for building policy-based access control systems and enabling pay-per-use functionalities. IOTA Access is designed to provide dedicated access control “for any machine, device, and building” in a decentralized manner without requiring a permanent Internet connection.

The core philosophy of the product is a zero-trust architecture according to the motto: “Never trust, always check”. This means that the way a system or solution is inherently designed must take into account that even trustworthy insiders can be vulnerabilities in a network. In the announcement, the IOTA Foundation states that the aim is to enable “services and security on a large scale” based on this philosophy:

If there’s a device that can offer a service, then Access can be built into it to automate that service through embedded access control policies. This allows device users and owners to grant or request access to their device, or data stream, in a remote, permissionless, contactless, and auditable manner. Without decentralizing access control in an efficient peer-to-peer manner, we will continue to have our data, our devices, and our daily lives controlled by centralized institutions.

According to the IOTA Foundation, the application scenarios are extremely extensive and diverse. For example, practically any object can be equipped with IOTA Access: “your house, your bicycle, your scooter, your car” and be rented out or the access authorization can be passed on to a trusted person without having to hand over a key:

If you have a smart door lock, then it can integrate IOTA Access with embedded policies for pay per use rentals, or to simply increase the transparency and security of entering your home and allowing access to others. Signify your home is available on a decentralized marketplace, and anyone can find it and rent it.

Have a connected vehicle that you want to rent out when you’re out of town? Wouldn’t it be great if you could leave it at the airport when you flew out, and someone getting off a plane could jump right in and pay you for using it? Or if your spouse, sibling, or friend could come to pick it up for you without you having to figure out what to do with the keys. Well, now that’s a possibility.

Wi-Fi routers are another conceivable use case. Users can monetize this using IOTA Access without the need for a subscription service managed by another organization. The router can include a predefined access policy, such as pay-per-minute or pay-per-megabyte, or reward shop purchases with free access.

As the IOTA Foundation also announced, further development of IOTA Access will enable integration with other IOTA products, “including enhanced automation and flexibility with Smart Contracts, secure sharing of secrets with IOTA Stronghold, and sharing and monetization of decentralized data streams with IOTA Streams“.

Via Twitter, Mat Yargar, Head of Mobility and Automotive, revealed that IOTA Chronicle as a persistent distributed data storage solution is an ideal complement to IOTA Access:

Despite the wide range of use cases, the initial focus of the product will be on the automotive industry. For example, the software should enable consumers to remotely access and control cars. Dominik Schiener, co-founder of IOTA, told Reuters that the product will be installed in Jaguar cars “because the British car manufacturer has a long-standing partnership with IOTA”. According to Schiener, the vehicles could, for example, allow remote access to the boot to allow a neighbor to put a delivered package in.

With IOTA Access, we have to focus on getting more to the consumer. You want to be able to use your phone to access anything. Our phones should be our personal keys.
